The Torrington Church
After several years of planning and discussion, a
Bible study group began meeting on Tuesday nights in
the conference room of a business owned by a
Christian who was worshipping with the church in New
Milford. Out of this it was determined that a
congregation would be planted in Torrington, to
begin in the fall of 2003.
The church began meeting on Sundays at the East
Elementary School in September of that year with 13
Christians from the New Milford congregation plus
Steve and Maryann Bastin. Two weeks later they were
joined by two Christian ladies from the Waterbury
congregation who lived in the Torrington area. Since
the beginning, two of those who came from New
Milford returned to that congregation, one has quit
attending and two teenagers have gone off to
college. In the meantime, 19 have been baptized into
Christ. Many of those baptized are people who have
responded to our community mailing of "Straight
Bible Talk" into their homes. Three of the ones
baptized have moved out of the area, three have quit
attending, leaving us with 27 active members
representing 20 families.
Several of those baptized are senior citizens,
others are the parents of children still living at
home. We currently have about 10 children in our
Sunday morning and Wednesday evening Bible classes.
After two and a half years meeting at the elementary
school, we were able to lease a building on one of
the principal streets in Torrington. We moved into
this new facility in May of 2006 after remodeling to
put in three classrooms, two rest rooms and a
baptistry. We have active home Bible studies with
several people in the community and look forward to
continued growth of the Torrington congregation of
the Lord's people.
